skinny-fat

Passion. You're either annoyed by it, criticize it, give a mean look at it... or you are it.

There are two kinds of people in my mind.

Ones who are passionate: they appreciate things, smile at things, find the beauty in things, and live out these things.

Ones who aren't: gossip about those people, judge those people, will "never understand those people." aka: debbie lame downers.

I know a lot of both. It's sad because when I'm around those who aren't passionate, they somehow make me feel so insecure just for being me. For caring. For concerning. For being passionate about being healthy.

One year ago, I was skinny fat. Size 6 and....29% body fat? Sorry, but is that even scientifically possible?? Especially for someone who has seriously educated herself on health and food for well over 5 years.

so I hit the gym. {remember?}

One year later, I'm still me.

Except now, I'm 17% body fat. And that my friends, is called very hard work. Not obsession. Not idolization. Not anything. Passion. HUGE difference. Because if there isn't passion... it will all be over very, very soon.

Skinny-fat is almost as much of an epedimic as obesity. There are so many "regular" girls walking around today that have just as an unhealthy body and heart as their plus-size neighbor. and that bothers me. The way heavier people are treated, when majority of people around them are just the same? annoying. I'll save that for a rainy day.

{tips for beginners}

{Clean up your diet} So, you want to stop the yo-yo exercising? Face your fridge first. What are you putting in your body? This will yield the greatest results. Also, the better you eat, the better you workout. Maybe that's why it's so hard?

{Pick up your weights} Your muscles are your friend. But of course, you have to know how to work those muscles. Utilize the internet, magazines, heck..even my blog and others. Learn how to use weight lifting for fat loss, because I promise with everything in me- weight lifting is the trick.

{Throw the scale away} One year ago I told Charlie... Okay, I'm going to start working out again..but just watch. I'm going to gain weight. That's what I thought happened when I would workout. Sure, that's possible. If you do it wrong. And if you eat wrong. It'll happen and it does happen. Don't just go to the gym, fix the other stuff too. Then your stomach will be bikini ready, once and for all. And screw that scale, let your pants fall to the ground first.

{Be patient} If you do this thing right...you'll see results. So get educated and then be patient. It took me 6 months to see any change. That's because I wasn't doing it right. And then I started doing it right and I lost 10% body fat so fast I thought it was all a joke.

{Things I learned}

I'm capable of a lot more than I ever let myself believe {45 minutes on the stairs? 11 mph sprints? who am I?}

Being dedicated has it's moments of suckiness {Yes. I want to be a typical lazy american somedays. But, that's not how life is supposed to be anyway}

Oatmeal saved my life {Before getting serious, I had cereal every morning. Switching to oatmeal was the best decision e-v-e-r, even though cheerios are better. Oh, but my stomach's flatter and I'm NEVER bloated anymore. worth-it.}

Protein helps {Increasing my protein intake through more meats {eggs, chicken, fish} and having whey after my workout totally changed everything. It helped reveal everything I'd been working for}

I still love Yoga {which is why....drumroll...I'm getting certified to teach group classes! Yoga specifically.}

I didn't think I would last this long. I was suprised when I actually went to the gym everyday for that first month. Now a year's gone by. Something clicked. So, if you get in your car and drive yourself to face the gym..it might click for you too.

I'm Katy and I'm passionate as all get out. I never want to be skinny fat again.

  1. I agree that diet is the big key. Would you be open to posting some of your weekly menus sometimes? I know what's healthy and what's not, but it's hard to always come up with a *variety* of different meals.

    Also, I don't know if I missed it, but my biggest trip up, is eating out. It's so hard to figure out what to order at clutch time. What's your typical order when you're out? Thanks!

  2. Katy this was music to my ears!! I have often been discouraged by the lack of progress only to later realize it was my own self-sabotaging...I didn't really think I could do it {still a struggle}. Thanks for the great encouragement and reminder of what this whole fitness journey is really about.

  3. Congrats on your amazing accomplishment! I agree that passion is the key to life and success. I'm so happy to have come upon your blog!
    I just wanted to ask you what you did after 6 months to get that drastic decrease in body fat? What did you realize you were doing wrong?
    Thank you so much!!

    I think its amazing that you have been able to keep up with this for so long. Your post makes me want to find out my % body fat..

  5. I am totally skinny fat! I am not heacy or overweight at all, and I am pretty darn proud of myself because I have had two kids. But my husband met me when I was playing volleyball in college, working out sometimes 3 to 6 hours a day. Needless to say, he might want a bit more out of me! And he deserves it! {totally doesn't help that he is a professional athlete and works out for a living. How's that for comparison!} Anyway, love your posts, I need to start.

  7. It's SO easy to get discouraged! But that consistency will deliver if you're doing it right! And when it delievers, it delievers FAST. Proud of you, Faith!

  8. This is awesome! Thanks for all the tips! I never thought about it like that... being skinny fat.... but I totally am! Except ever since having a baby I have an extra 10 lbs on my skinny fat frame. I'm like thin fat or average fat now haha. Before that, I was the same, size 6, probably plenty of body fat, but now I have the extra pounds I haven't tried hard enough to get rid of!

    Can I ask you a personal question? You can just answer yes or no, but when you really got determined to start working out and it actually became a consistent habit, did you have an increased libido? Sorry if that's tmi :)

  13. LOVE this post! I feel the same way - last year when I started lifting heavy and eating healthier, watching my portion sizes, and just eating real food, my body changed for the better. It's funny how similar my story seems to yours - I was a size 6 skinny fat girl too.

    Unfortunately, sometimes I let graduate school stress and crazy busy schedule get the better of me, but I'm working on it. I'd love to have a workout buddy like you!

  14. i LOVE these muscle monday posts!! you've inspired me to swap out my morning cereal with some steel cut oatmeal. i'm 2 weeks in and i'm loving it (not to mention the fact that I finally figured out how to cook it properly, lol). and i'm so impressed that you went from 29% to 17% body fat within a year! thanks for the motivation to keep going to the gym. :)

    cute & little

  15. I AM SO GLAD YOU WROTE THIS! I was skinny-fat... I still have some work to do to be at my goal, but I lost about 20 lbs already and feel the best I have ever felt in my life. I was never obese, never really overweight or what some may call fat, but I felt sooooo out of shape. You are preaching the WORD about being thin on the outside, but still unhealthy. That was me :)

    I used to pay $700 a month for a trainer and then go to McDonalds after my session... what an idiot! When I had to stop working out due to a back injury, I told myself to at least just eat right and like you said... what you put in really does make all the difference.

    I actually lost fat just by not eating fast food and doing zero exercise... Now that I am clear to start my work outs again, I am so excited, I cant wait to moving toward my goal and have lean, long, sexy muscles! Strong girls rock!

    :) Thanks for inspiring us! I love your Monday posts!

  21. Yay, Katy!!!!! You're an inspiration and a great influence. I want to be in your yoga classes. And I love oatmeal too. I have it every morning for breakfast - the heart healthy kind, not the loaded with maple & brown sugar kind. Go Kate Go!

  22. wow totally crazy that I just found your blog and the "skinny fat" thing is something that I have had on my mind for a while. I am a size 4 but not toned. I recently started doing P90x at home. I have a gym membership but it's really hard for me to get there often because I have a young son. I also started "clean eating". I haven't lost much (maybe a few pounds) but that wasn't my goal anyway...my goal was to be toned and fit...and of course healthier.

  41. You can do it, Natalia! You've got that athlete in you anyway, which is more than I can say if you remember one of my MM posts not too long ago!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks, Kelly! And finding out your body fat% is fairly simple. You will need a trainer at your local gym to do it for you, takes a couple minutes and is usually totally free. Give it a shot!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks! The decrease in body fat came when I began HIIT training and lifting heavier weights. When I started practicing exercises that were geared toward higher intensity, higher heart rate activities, it all came off.

  50. Girl I am so in a skinny fat rut right now, lol! Grad school has been absolutely consuming this semester, and when my family came into town for spring break it threw me off even more. I NEED to get back into the gym! I wished we lived closer so you could drag me along with you! haha. We're going to the Riviera Maya in May, and I need to look as good in my bikini as I did last summer for our Cancun honeymoon! Good news though - I've got the oatmeal down PAT! Double fiber by Quaker! lol

  51. First time commenting. I love your blog!

    Okay, you've convinced me to give oatmeal another shot, but question: what kind of oatmeal do you use and how do you cook it?! I've been trying to love oatmeal for a long time but have yet to stumble on some that I find edible. Do tell!

  56. Seriously about the oatmeal thing?? I have cereal and a boiled egg every morning! How do you cook your oatmeal? Does it need to be a specific kind?

    ReplyDelete
  57. old fashioned rolled oats or steel cut oats. no packaged instant crap! and don't load your oatmeal with butter and sugar. add splenda if need be, but load up on fruits in it!

  58. Welcome, Bre :) glad you found me!

  59. What an awesome post! :) Just found your blog through Jamie Eason's transformation pics on FB, btw and so glad I did! I lost 25 lbs a year ago, but did it by being a total cardio junkie (and eating well of course!) now I'm ready to pick up the weights and see what my body can REALLY become!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I was size 2 and 29% body fat after my knee surgery. (February 2009) I had my last fitness assessment about 6 months ago and I was 18% body fat (I was 17% the one before that in July and I got worse. I also did 2 fewer pushups and only did 66 this last time)

    I will add that I gained weight. People thought I lost weight. I dropped 2 pants sizes (which made it even worse to find clothes that fit.) (I'm back up 1 of those pants sizes though.) If I quit working out I lose 3 lbs ... but I don't quit because I love working out and lifting and being healthier and lifting as much as the guys in Body Pump.

    I love this post. my comments above make it seem like it's all about me but I was in agreement with what you said and that's why I said what I did.

  64. Such a great blog! You are right on the money with "skinny-fat" that's where I am right now, I was so fit about a year ago and i have totally been slacking. But no one but me would really notice. Maybe checking in with your blog will help with my lack of motivation!

  65. love this post! I have been such a huge cardio junkie since after highschool. I used to hardcore weight lift from grade 10-12 and just GAINED weight but now I know it was because my diet was terrible! I bulked up hardcore with muscle & fat. After that I ditched most of the weights and just did cardio for 5 years..threw some weights in there once in a while! Now im finally eating way cleaner and back into weight lifting! I am loving it already! What a difference diet makes! And I feel WAY stronger after only 2 weeks! My husband even said to me the other day that I have some major biceps happenin! :O I always wondered why I wasn't happy with my body even though the scale was at the low end..and it was because i was skinny-fat! Thanks again!!!

  66. I just found you blog and I am sooo grateful I stumbled across through Pinterest! I (along with probably millions of others) am starting the new year with a new attitude when it comes to getting healthy. I have about 60 lbs to lose! YIKES! But my major downfall has always been motivation and passion for it. So far, your blog has fired something in me to make me realize that I can do this....no pressure or anything...but keep up the great blogging! HAHA :)
    PS--I know this post was awhile ago (Im working backwards)...what KIND of oatmeal do you have for breakfast?
